Amalgamates
A tragic fusion of lost friends, bound together by Determination.
Amalgamates are tragic, grotesque fusions of multiple monsters that occur when they are injected with Determination before their souls can fully separate or die. Created during Dr. Alphys' experiments in the True Lab, these beings represent a nightmare outcome where individuality is lost in a single, writhing mass. They are non-hostile and do not attack the protagonist, instead symbolizing the catastrophic failure of Dr. Alphys' desperate attempts to save the monsters.

Lore & Background
These beings are not mindless monsters but suffering collections of individuals. Each Amalgamate retains fragments of its constituent members' memories and emotions, leading to a constant internal conflict that manifests as physical pain and erratic behavior. They are often found wandering the True Lab, trapped in a cycle of confusion and agony. Their existence highlights the cruelty of the situation: even in fusion, the monsters could not find peace, serving as a grim reminder of the stakes involved in breaking the barrier.
In Their Own Story
The air in the lab hums with a sickening static, thick with the smell of ozone and old fear. A shadow detaches itself from the wall, a writhing mass of limbs that doesn't quite belong to any single creature. It stumbles forward, a chorus of muffled whispers escaping its many mouths, pleading for separation even as their bodies refuse to let go. One eye weeps tears while another stares blankly at the ceiling, trapped in a moment of eternal panic. The room feels smaller now, the walls closing in on this tragedy made flesh.
Reader's Guide
Amalgamates are not items or powers that characters can wield; they are enemies encountered exclusively within the True Lab during the main story progression. In gameplay terms, they function as multi-stage bosses where the player must navigate a complex battle arena while avoiding attacks from multiple limbs simultaneously. Their significance lies entirely in their lore and narrative weight rather than utility. They represent the failure of Determination to save everyone when used incorrectly or without preparation. Unlike standard enemies that can be spared through mercy, Amalgamates require specific actions to resolve their suffering, often involving a choice between ending their pain permanently or attempting to free them. Only the protagonist and their companion Sans (in certain contexts) interact with these beings directly during the True Pacifist route. The player cannot use an Amalgamate as a weapon or tool; they are obstacles that must be overcome through empathy, combat, or specific story choices that alter the fate of the Underground.
