Ruins Story Arc
Where a fallen child meets the monsters who once called the surface home.
The Ruins Story Arc serves as the prologue and foundational chapter of the Underground's saga, introducing the fallen human child to a world they were never meant to enter. This ancient, inverted cavern acts as both a sanctuary for monsters and a prison for those who cannot ascend, marking the first encounter between humanity and the magical inhabitants below. As the starting point for all timelines, this arc establishes the core mechanics of mercy and violence while introducing Toriel, the gentle guardian who attempts to raise the child in isolation. It is here that the fundamental conflict of the game takes root: whether to follow a path of compassion or succumb to the urge to eliminate obstacles.

Lore & Background
Beneath the Barrier that separates the Underground from the human world lie the Ruins, the remains of the old capital city Home where monsters lived after being sealed underground. They were not originally constructed as a dwelling for the banishment, but became a place of forgotten history and twisted time. The architecture is distinctively inverted, with stairs leading down into darkness rather than up toward light, symbolizing the fall from grace that defined this era. The Ruins are steeped in tragedy, serving as the site where Toriel and Asgore took in the first fallen human (Chara) after they fell into the Underground, a memory that haunts Toriel's every action when she discovers another. The area is populated by lesser monsters like Froggits and Whimsuns who have adapted to the dim environment, reacting to the human based on their own instincts rather than being taught by any flower-like entity.
In Their Own Story
The air in the Ruins is thick with dust and the scent of damp earth. You stand before a door that feels impossibly heavy, your small hand trembling against its cold surface. A soft voice calls out from the shadows, warm like a hearth fire on a winter night. "Welcome," it says, though there are no eyes to see you. As you step forward, the ground seems to shift beneath your feet, not with malice, but with the weight of centuries of waiting. In this place, even the stones seem to hold their breath, watching to see if you will bring light or darkness.
Reader's Guide
The journey begins as the child falls through a hole in the mountain and lands in the Ruins. Initially lost, they are guided by Toriel, who teaches them the basics of movement and combat. A pivotal moment occurs when Flowey appears, forcing the child to choose between sparing or attacking. This first decision sets the tone for the entire playthrough; killing monsters here yields EXP and LV, while sparing preserves their peace. The arc culminates at the exit door, where Toriel attempts to prevent the child from leaving. The player must decide whether to fight her or show mercy. Choosing violence leads to a confrontation that changes the game's ending permanently, whereas showing compassion allows the story to continue toward Snowdin with a different emotional weight.
Did You Know?
- The True Lab is located in the basement of Toriel's house in the Ruins, but it is not accessible at all during a first playthrough; it requires a Neutral Route completion and then a True Pacifist playthrough.
- If you kill every monster in the Ruins on your first visit, Toriel's dialogue changes significantly to reflect her fear.
- Flowey's tutorial on killing is actually a manipulation tactic designed to test the child's potential for violence.
- The inverted layout of the Ruins mirrors the concept of falling rather than rising.
