Lore & Background

Asgore and the monsters he ruled were driven into the Underground, a cave beneath Mt. Ebott, millennia ago by hostile humans and trapped there by a magical Barrier. Before the game's events, he and his wife Toriel had two children: Asriel and an adopted human named Chara. Both Asriel and Chara were ultimately killed by humans following an ill-fated plan to cross the Barrier. Seeking revenge on humanity, Asgore declared that he would collect the souls of any humans who fell into the Underground, intending to use their power to destroy the Barrier. However, unwilling to fully enact his plan, he chose to wait passively in his castle for the six humans who fell after Chara and Asriel, fighting them only when they arrived. Toriel, angered by his hypocrisy, decided to live alone in the Ruins.

In Their Own Story

Asgore is unseen for most of the game, though characters like Toriel warn the protagonist about him. Other monsters are more positive, including Undyne, who he helped on her path to becoming captain of the Royal Guard. She tells the human that when she once attacked him, she couldn't land a single hit while Asgore was not even fighting back. When the human eventually meets Asgore, he is anxious to fight, doing so out of duty rather than personal desire. During battle, he destroys the Mercy menu option, preventing the human from sparing him and forcing them to fight to the death. Unlike other encounters, the player must fight him, though his health will not lower to zero upon defeat. At this point, Asgore accepts defeat, and the human can choose to either kill or spare him. If spared, he decides not to break the Barrier and instead become part of a family with the human. In the Genocide route, the player is strong enough to immediately kill Asgore in one hit.

Reader's Guide

Asgore first appears in Undertale, serving as one of the game's antagonists. He is a Boss Monster and the king of the Underground. He has killed six humans before the protagonist and intends to take the protagonist's soul as the seventh. In battle, he destroys the Mercy menu option, forcing the player to fight. His health will not lower to zero upon defeat; at that point, the player can choose to kill or spare him. If spared, he is moved and decides not to break the Barrier. In the Genocide route, the player kills him in one hit. In Deltarune, Asgore appears as an NPC in a parallel universe. He has divorced Toriel, while Asriel is still alive. He was formerly the town's chief of police but left for unknown reasons. He owns a flower shop named "Flower King." In Chapter 4, he attempts to make amends with Toriel but is rejected. In Chapter 5, his flower shop becomes a Dark World, with him appearing as king in attire similar to his Undertale appearance. At the end of the chapter, it is revealed he has been burdened by guilt and self-hatred since an unnamed tragedy years ago, leading to his divorce. The Roaring Knight kidnaps him before the protagonists can stop them.

• Asgore was initially intended to be intimidating until Toby Fox thought of his friend Reid Young, leading him to make Asgore 'goofy.'
• In early concept art by Temmie Chang, Asgore was depicted without a beard.
• His colored sprite originally had black hair, but Fox changed it for readability.
• Asgore's theme 'Bergentrückung' takes its name from the German term for 'king in the mountain,' a figure in folklore.
