Neutral Route

A fractured journey where mercy and violence shape a unique, bittersweet ending.

The Neutral Route serves as the default narrative path for players who explore the Underground without adhering to a strict moral code of absolute pacifism or total genocide. It represents the vast majority of player experiences, defined by the freedom to make individual choices regarding every monster encountered. In this trajectory, the protagonist may spare some enemies while defeating others, leading to a story that shifts dynamically based on who survives and who falls.

Final Boss
Asgore (default); Sans if a significant number of monsters have been killed

Lore & Background

The ending of this route is notably poignant because it reveals that while the human child escapes to the surface, the monsters remain trapped. The barrier is not lifted, and the cycle of fear continues. However, the game remembers every life taken; if a single monster was killed, the final message emphasizes that the world could have been better, serving as a meta-commentary on the player's agency and the cost of their choices.

In Their Own Story

The rain outside the barrier feels heavier than usual, though Frisk cannot feel it yet. Inside, the silence of the throne room lingers after the dust settles. A single monster stands guard, eyes wide with exhaustion and confusion, while others watch from the shadows. The human turns away, stepping through the gate that leads to a world they barely remember. Behind them, the Underground holds its breath, waiting for a savior who chose only to survive.

Reader's Guide

The journey begins in the Ruins, where the player learns the mechanics of sparing and fighting. Throughout Snowdin, Waterfall, Hotland, and the Core, every encounter presents a fork: show mercy or deal damage. If the player kills some but not all monsters, the story remains fluid. Characters like Toriel may be spared or defeated, changing who meets Frisk later. The true divergence occurs in New Home; if Papyrus is alive, he joins Undyne and Mettaton for a final stand against the human. The climax depends entirely on who survived the journey. If Sans is still present, he acts as the final gatekeeper, delivering a judgment that reflects the specific number of LV (Level of Violence) gained. The ending screen then displays a unique message based on exactly which major characters were killed or spared.
